10 Promising Indie Turn-Based RPGs Expected In 2022 – GameSpace.com

Turn-based games were everywhere at their peak a few decades ago. There could be several reasons for such popularity at this time. The graphics limitations of older computers could probably contribute to this. Another explanation could be that the developers were trying to keep the mechanics their players were more familiar with. Although not without some good innovations.

The style seems to have become less common over the years. It seems like most gamers only care about the action anymore. Even game series that have long maintained the traditional style have moved away from it. Take for example, Final Fantasy VII Remake with its much more action-oriented combat, compared to the original. Note, however, that the developers plan to bring back the more classic mechanics in the next remake: Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis.

Still, some game series have stayed true to their roots, refusing to abandon the turn-based style. There are also indie developers, inspired by the classics and looking to emulate their more traditional mechanics. The future looks surprisingly bright for turn-based games, with many companies returning to this type of gameplay. This is especially true in the RPG genre, as we hope to demonstrate with these 10 promising turn-based RPGs due in 2022.

Developed by White Pond Games, with Microprose as publisher, Urban conflict is slated for release in 2022. The developers describe it as an old-school turn-based strategy, with a mix of Roleplay and Survival elements. It takes place amid the chaos of a post-apocalyptic world. The fight looks tactically intensive, from what they’ve shown. Weapons and bullet ballistics, in particular, have a major impact on gameplay.

You begin your journey, rescued by the survivors of Urban Urban Shelter. You suffer from amnesia, unable to remember everything that has happened so far. Soon you learn that a zombie apocalypse happened two years ago. Now your goal is to assemble a team, help survivors, some of whom may join you, and finally bring hope to people, in the midst of dark times. In this, not only do you have to beware of the zombies, roaming the ruins, but also the remnants of the human population, some of which are now beyond negotiation.

songs of conquest

Next on our list is a game called songs of conquest, developed by Lavapotion. Their publishers, at Coffee Stain Publishing, aim to release it in the first quarter of 2022. The game seems to have that classic 90s big box PC feel, full of character abilities and spells and with a long story-driven campaign. . There’s even modding support, with players having access to the same engine the developers used to create their own stories.

There also seems to be a deep simulation element to the game, with a strong emphasis on building and expanding your empire. A group of powerful magicians, called Porters, will assist you in your task. They will follow your lead, as you travel the world, forging your kingdom in a land divided between four factions. As for what exactly these factions are, here’s a quote from the Steam page:

Arleon, the ancient knights fight for dominance. Rana, ancient tribes struggling for survival in the swamp. Lot, necromancers raising the dead to create a glorious future. Barya, daring mercenaries and inventors dedicated to currency, gunpowder and independence.”

broken roads

broken roads has a different vibe than most other isometric RPGs. Although similar to Urban Strife with its post-apocalyptic setting, it seems to be very different in its gameplay. Its developers at Drop Bear Bytes emphasize the importance of making “philosophical” choices, with a unique morality system, the Moral Compass, guiding player decisions. The mechanic looks promising, although it’s unclear at this time what effect it will have in the game.

As already mentioned, the game takes place during the post-apocalypse. Players will find themselves in an alternate version of outback Australia, with plenty of authentic locations to roam. Like most other RPGs, the game features a party system, with many companions who will join the player on their journeys through the desert. The focus, however, is still on decision-making rather than combat. The creators promise story-driven gameplay with plenty of choices to make.

Team 17 publishers have scheduled the game for release in 2022.

The developers plan to release lost eidolons during the third quarter of 2022, with an early access release scheduled for earlier that year.

sea of stars

sea of stars is developed and published by Sabotage Studio, known for its critically acclaimed side-scrolling game The messenger, released a few years ago. They are aiming this time for a retro-inspired RPG, like the trigger of a stopwatch and other classic JPRGs. The game is scheduled for release on computer and nintendo switch in 2022. Support for other consoles was also discussed in an announcement in early 2022.

The story of sea of stars revolves around two children of the solsticeValere the Moongirl and Zale the Sunboy, who can combine their powers to play Eclipse Magic. The iron oath

Developed by Curious Panda Games, with their publishers at Humble Games, The iron oath does not yet have a release date. It’s a fantasy-themed game with turn-based tactical battles. From the preview, it also doesn’t look like he’ll be shy about gore.

The player’s task is to lead and grow a band of mercenaries, their only objective being to survive in the brutal land of Caelum. Their journey spans several centuries. Mercenaries will fight, age, retire, and eventually die, as the world changes around them. As with most RPGs of this type, there will be a lot of character customization with meaningful choices players will have to make along the way.

Under Orese

Under Orese is a deck-building roguelike, developed and published by Broken Spear Inc. It has a tentative release date of 2022.

As the name suggests, the battles you will fight take place deep under the city of Orese, in particular, “tactics”, as the developers call them, arenas. The somewhat cel-shaded graphics give the game a crisp, almost comic book-like style. You can select your heroes and companions, many of which have their own special abilities, while dealing with multiple in-game factions while building your deck.

Players will update their maps using custom Forked Enhancement System. Here you will have to choose carefully which upgrade will benefit you the most in the battles to come.

war hammer

Even without knowing anything about this game, most people have to admit that it has a hell of a name! Developed by Complex Games and published by Frontier Foundry, Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Demon Hunters is the latest installment in the Warhammer franchise, scheduled for release in 2022.

The developers promise fast and ruthless battles, with the player in control of an elite group of warriors, called gray knights, known as “mankind’s greatest weapon”. Not much is said about these soldiers, as you lead them through the dark darkness of the 41st millennium. The game offers plenty of customization options for your warriors, including their voice, armor, and even facial expressions! It also has great visuals, at least from what the developers have shown so far.

Developed and published by Orc Chop Games, goblin stones has a release date of May 2022. While many games are played from the perspective of a human or elven hero, this one is made from the perspective of their traditional enemies – a tribe of goblins. Decimated during recent conflicts, they must now unite and fight to ensure the survival of their species.

goblin stones is a 2D strategy with strong RPG elements, as well as Dungeon Crawler mechanics. It also has beautiful hand-drawn graphics. Although the world is procedurally generated, the developers aim for a story-driven campaign, where player choices matter. The story is promised to be fully told, with music by Peter McConnell, known for his work at LucasArts.

The last game on this list is a tactical JRPG – very classic for the genre. The release will take place in March 2022, according to the Steam page. Gameplay-wise, the title looks quite traditional. Its developers and publishers, Black March Studios, cite Final Fantasy Tactics, Tactics Ogre, and Crimson Tactics as inspirations.

The story, too, seems to be very standard. It involves a sinister, fanatical empire and traitor, attempting to usurp the rightful throne. It also takes place in a customary medieval-fantasy universe. There’s almost no doubt that if you liked the games mentioned above, you’ll enjoy this one as well.
