Akira Toriyama’s Dragon ball has proven to be a staple of the shonen industry. For more than three decades, Dragon ball helped pave the way for heightened action storytelling capable of engaging in genre tropes, while working hard to subvert them and establish its own voice. Dragon ball continues to evolve satisfactorily, but it still feels like the same show it’s always been.
There are collectively more than 500 episodes of Dragon ball across its various series, but some fans see this immense amount of content slowly reaching diminishing returns. Dragon ball concludes so many fulfilling story arcs that could have ended the entire series with minor changes.
ten The first time Shenron is summoned
Dragon ball various series create a vast saga that lasts for hundreds of episodes and it is almost impossible not to think about the story of the anime that lasts for several decades. However, there are plenty of anime that humbly end after a dozen episodes and the original. Dragon ball could have taken the same approach after Shenron was first summoned. There are still so many Dragon ball universe to explore at this point, but that would be a bit fitting for a series called Dragon ball conclude when wish-granting orbs are all collected for the first time.
9 Goku becomes a Super Saiyan and defeats Frieza
There is a certain level of satisfaction in finishing Dragon ball as Goku transforms into a Super Saiyan, establish a new plateau of power and finally defeats Frieza for the galaxy. Goku’s first Super Saiyan transformation is a turning point in the series that sets a pattern for future story arcs, but it would also work as a poetic conclusion to Goku’s journey. Goku’s fight against Frieza is such a powerful fight that Dragon ball brought the character back several times.
8 Gohan defeats Cell and avenges Goku’s death
Dragon ball fans have certainly grown used to the idea that Goku will be the one to take down the next big threat and ultimately save the day. Goku usually wins these victories, but it becomes slightly predictable after a while.
An exciting exception occurs during the fight against Cell, who actually manages to overwhelm Goku, resulting in his death. Gohan has to pick up the pieces and he outshines his father and transforms into Super Saiyan 2. Gohan’s role as Earth’s protector is teased from the very first episode of Dragon Ball Z.
seven Goku wins the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai
The biggest threats in Dragon ball involve galactic tyrants who play by their own rules, but the original series spends a lot of time on preparation for Tenkaichi Budokai. This competition becomes a tradition in Dragon ball and it’s a solid springboard for the start of Goku’s martial arts career. Goku is finally able to beat his opponents and takes first place in the 23rd installment of the tournament. Goku’s victory here is a highlight of how much he’s grown, but it also ostensibly marks the end of the original. Dragon ball and it would be nice to say goodbye to those heroes.
6 Vegeta is defeated by the strongest on Earth
Dragon ball z introduction to the Saiyan saga marks pivotal changes for the franchise, such as the reveal that Goku is, in fact, a member of a warrior alien race. These Saiyan invaders devastate Earth’s heroes, culminating in an extremely close battle between Goku and Vegeta.
Goku’s narrow victory requires the help of Gohan, Krillin, and even Yajirobe. Vegeta’s defeat triggers what will follow with everyone’s exodus to planet Namek, but some consider it Dragon ball z high point. The Saiyan Saga could work as a short addendum to the original Dragon ball story.
5 Gohan’s ultimate upgrade results in Buu’s defeat
Plot progression and story arcs can often change from their original plans in the shonen series. Majin Buu’s attack in Dragon ball z It looks like he’s meant to be turned off by Gohan, especially after mastering the rare Ultimate Upgrade and Goku remains dead.
Gohan’s new strength proves not enough and he is absorbed by Buu, only for Goku to be the one to win later. So many Dragon ball z sounds like Gohan’s story, especially in the Buu Saga, so his defeat against this ancient evil would make a very cathartic close to the series.
4 The defeat of the Super 17
A lot of criticism is still directed at the sequel series, Dragon Ball GT, especially after Dragon ball super forged its own way into the barrel. Dragon ball gt takes ambitious swings and tries to revert to the original Dragon ball tone, which leads to an identity crisis in the series. Dragon ball gt ends very conclusively, but Goku’s victory over the Super 17 would also work as a strong place to end. There’s an emotional weight here with Krillin’s death and Piccolo’s sacrifice, as well as plenty of old faces that briefly return during the afterlife jailbreak.
3 Goku soars to the Super Saiyan god
New and powerful transformations have become a popular tradition in Dragon Ball. Dragon ball super pushes this trope to daring new places with the introduction of Super Saiyan God, Super Saiyan Blue, Ultra Instinct, and more. Super Saiyan God marks the start of Dragon ball super journey, but it also pushes Goku to such mighty heights. It is not hard to imagine a conclusion where Goku attains the power of God, protects the planet from destruction and transcends himself into a deity-like figure for the universe.
2 Universe 7 wins the Tournament of Power
Some may see the Tournament of Power’s multiversal battle royale as the end of Dragon ball super since this is where the animated series ends, but so more has happened to these heroes in the manga and follow-up feature films. It’s clear Universe 7 still has plenty of enemies to put out, but the Tournament of Power briefly feels like a height that can’t be passed. Goku and company literally protect the rest of the universes from erasure, overthrow Jiren from Universe 11, and Goku experience Ultra Instinct for the first time. Even Freeza is enjoying a substantial character arc.
1 Goku reunites with Grandpa Gohan
The original Dragon ball establishes that this universe is teeming with unusual fighters, some of whom hail from different realms or even the afterlife. Master Roshi’s sister, Fortuneteller Baba, is hosting an exhibition tournament full of characters that fill classic horror tropes. The big advantage of this competition is that Goku briefly finds Grandpa Gohan’s ghost. Grandpa Gohan’s teachings are all Goku has when Dragon ball begins and so this supernatural reunion would end his early adventures.
