A major group of DC villains have unexpectedly become heroes

Deceased The final chapter forces a major galactic threat to become heroes.

Writer Tom Taylor and artist Trevor Hairsine’s zombie epic begins this summer with Deceased: War of the Undead Gods. According to the September 2022 solicitations for DC Comics, the title’s second issue promises that the undead apocalypse will extend beyond Earth to the planet Korugar, Sinestro’s homeworld. To stop an undead Darkseid and his forces, the villainous Green Lantern and the rest of the Yellow Lantern Corps will have to work with the heroes they usually fight against.

  • The undead Darkseid begins his assault on the galaxy…attacking Korugar first! Could the fate of the planet hinge on the Yellow Lantern Corps pairing up with a Green Lantern? Also, what horrors do Big Barda and Mister Miracle find on New Genesis?

This isn’t the first time DC’s zombie series has forced villains to become heroes in order to survive. One of the spin-offs of the saga, Deceased: The Invincibles, saw villains like Deathstroke, Bane, Cheetah, and others working with Commissioner Jim Gordon, Batgirl/Cassandra Cain, and Red Hood/Jason Todd to protect a young group of survivors. Some of these former criminals died on the journey to Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn’s safe zone, the Garden.

However, all the villains of Deceased became a better person following the outbreak of the Anti-Life Equation virus. During Deceasedof the second main chapter, dead planet, it was revealed that a group of wealthy villains – Penguin, Professor Ivo, Simon Stagg and others – have created their own haven, where they have built an army of Amazo androids to wipe out the Anti-Living and reclaim Earth for themselves. . Worse still, they unleashed their army on the world just as the heroes had discovered and crafted a cure.

War of the Undead Gods will pick up on a cliffhanger left by dead planet. Although the sequel ended on a hopeful note with Black Canary kissing Green Arrow after being healed, dead planet #4 saw the undead Darkseid land on New Genesis, whose New Gods are shown in early artwork to be infected at the start of the final chapter. Supergirl is overwhelmed by the horde of zombies, her perilous fate seemingly sealed.

The series hasn’t been shy about infecting or outright killing fan-favorite characters in the past. The first installment of Deceased killed heroes like Batman, Flash Barry Allen and more, and ended with an undead Superman flying into the Sun to drain his energy (which is still in the star as of dead planet). Even more have died in the series’ spinoffs and sequels, such as John Constantine, Red Hood, and others.

Deceased: War of the Undead Gods #2 is written by Taylor with interior art by Hairsine and Andy Lanning, cover art by Howard Porter, and alternate covers contributed by Francesco Mattina, Dan Mora, Sun Khamunaki, and Kael Ngu. The issue is set to go on sale September 20 from DC Comics.
