Danny Welbeck shares brilliant Arsenal history that shows Thierry Henry’s true touch of class

It is said that you should never meet your heroes, but that was not the case with Danny Welbeck when he met Thierry Henry.

The Brighton forward said that when he grew up as a Manchester United fan he was fascinated by the Frenchman’s abilities and prowess.

And why not? The striker was one of the greatest strikers the English League has ever seen.

Then, when Welbeck left United for the Gunners in 2014, the 42-time cap England international said he had the honor of speaking to the former Barcelona star.

But rather than exchange jokes, Henry went out of his way to help the striker settle in at the north London club.

You could even say that he went the extra mile and they still stay in touch.

When asked who his role model footballer was in the pre-match schedule ahead of Brighton’s game with Arsenal in early October, he replied: “Thierry Henry”.

“While I was a United fan watching Thierry tear him apart on TV was just amazing.

“When I was at Arsenal I had the opportunity to meet him several times and I had the privilege of being able to talk to him about the game.

“He’s such a great guy he was always there to ask for advice – he even invited you to his home to watch game videos.

“He was always there for me when I was at Arsenal and even after I left.

“What a brilliant role model for a young black man like me who grew up – and also when I had made my own way in the game.”

Welbeck made 126 appearances for Arsenal, scoring 32 times, before leaving for Watford in the summer of 2019.

He has been with the Seagulls since October 2020 and has seven goals to date with the club.
