Fantastic Beasts 3 Ending: Gellert Grindelwald’s Diabolical Plan For Wizard Domination

After being cleared of all charges resulting from his actions in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, the titular villain decides to run for public office. Of course, Gellert Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen) won’t be running a clean campaign, as his ambitions to fight for wizarding supremacy know no bounds. As such, his plans to become the next Supreme Mugwump of the International Confederation of Wizards (ICW) are quite shady and are the main conflict in Dumbledore’s secrets.

Gellert tries to rig the election in his favor, which we see from the latter’s first act fantastic beasts film. Aurelius Dumbledore, formerly known as Credence Barebone (Ezra Miller), is sent to kidnap a newborn Qilin, a beast known to see deep into a person’s heart and soul and deem them truly worthy. Used in the ritual known as The Walk of the Qilin, the ICW calls upon the creature’s abilities to determine which candidate for Supreme Mugwump should be victorious.

By abducting one of the baby Qilins, Grindlewald can not only see into the future using the beast’s blood, but by resurrecting it, he is able to convince it that he is worthy of becoming Supreme Mugwump. Everything is going according to plan, and for a moment it looks like Gellert Grindelwald will have his way. Grindelwald celebrates by torturing Jacob Kowalski with the Cruciatus Curse, before finally being stopped in his tracks.

Albus Dumbledore and his team of heroes actually succeeded in exposing these misdeeds towards the end of Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets, with thanks from a pure Qilin. The uninfluenced twin bows to Albus Dumbledore, who naturally abdicates the position. Which means contestant Victoria Santos (Maria Fernanda Cândido) is named the next Supreme Mugwump, and Grindelwald flees.

The Blood Pact: How the Dumbledores Broke Grindelwald’s Oath and What’s Next

Amidst all this activity, we see the blood pact that kept Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald from fighting. After being exposed, Grindelwald tries to kill the already dying Aurelius Dumbledore, but is stopped by his father Aberforth (Richard Coyle) and his uncle Albus. The two brothers cast spells to protect theirs, and for the moment the young man is spared. In explaining how this magic worked the way it did, Albus states the following:

He sought to kill. I sought to protect. Our fates met.

It’s not just a repeat of the three-way duel these men had in their youth, it also feels like a callback/setup to how Harry survives Voldemort’s attempted murder. The two Dumbledore brothers’ protection spells undo Grindelwald’s deadly strike and break the blood pact between the former couple. While Albus could not act against Gellert, he could act to protect Aurelius, who canceled the blood pact.

Of course, now the way is set for Gellert Grindelwald and Albus Dumbledore to engage in what some would ultimately call the greatest wizarding duel of all time. The events in Fantastic Beasts 3 Doors open for the duel, which we know will ultimately take place in 1945 and comes before Dumbledore becomes the Headmaster of Hogwarts we know and love. Harry Potter as well as the person who won the right to the Elder Wand.

How Jacob Kowalski and Queenie Goldstein Pave the Way for Wizards and Muggles After the Crimes of Grindelwald

For most of Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets, Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler) and Queenie Goldstein (Alison Sudol), apparently cursed, are still separated. When Sister Goldstein defected to Gellert Grindelwald in The Crimes of Grindelwald, she starts the film with the infamous sorcerer and his misdeeds. This seems to take its toll on her, even when Queenie briefly sees Jacob in Berlin, allegedly trying to assassinate Grindelwald.

As these ever-opposed forces meet in Bhutan for The Walk of the Qilin, a huge election in the magical world, Jacob tries and succeeds in talking Queenie out of staying with the bad guys. From then on, Queenie rejects Grindelwald’s cruelty and helps the rest of the heroes to Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets save the day from the heinous scheme at the heart of the villain’s plan.

It seems that Queenie Goldstein has escaped Gellert Grindelwald, and if Fantastic Beasts 4 happens, she and Jacob Kowalski can hopefully team up to continue championing muggle-wizarding relations. With the more unpleasant climate of Gellert Grindelwald’s eventual rise to power looming in the distance, Queenie and Jacob could be targets for Grindelwald’s more fanatical pureblood followers at some point in the future. Hopefully their love will get them through. (More on that later).

Newt, Tina, and the future event yet to come into play in Fantastic Beasts 4 and 5

Perhaps the most anticipated event, and the one that made fans ask “Where’s Tina?” in the marketing blitz for Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secretsis the eventual marriage between mostly absent Tina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston) and Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne). An educated guess would suggest that this moment would be the cornerstone of the entire five-movie cycle, but again, we’re not sure that will even happen right now.

There’s also the matter of Newt’s loyal assistant/admirer, Bunty Broadacre (Victoria Yeates), who is apparently in love with her boss. With Tina gone for most of this film and Bunty stepping in to save the day, it’s possible a love triangle could spoil the works of this supposedly fluid romance. I’m especially thinking about when Bunty looks a little uncomfortable reuniting with Newt and Tina at the end of this movie, and if she gets more screen time in 4 it is possible that she can talk about her feelings. If that happens, it will only complicate matters further, as we still have Gellert Grindelwald’s reign of terror to look forward to in Fantastic Beasts 4 and or 5.

How Dumbledore’s Secrets Ends on a Happy Note, But Hints at More Darkness to Come

Gellert Grindelwald’s final attempts to ignite open war between wizards and Muggles failed thanks to a few ingenious moves by the team, and one in particular by Bunty. With Grindelwald fleeing capture – but swearing he was never an enemy of the wizarding world – a temporary peace returns. It’s the perfect time for introspection, reunion and a wedding! We get all these things at the end of Fantastic Beasts 3as Jacob Kowalski and Queenie Goldstein get married at Jacob’s New York bakery.

Back for the nuptials is Tina Goldstein, whom we finally see reunited with her future husband and former partner in crime Newt Scamander. Just before it all begins, Newt is visited by Professor Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law), with whom he had teamed up to thwart Grindelwald’s latest plans. After a brief reunion, Dumbledore gently observes the wedding in progress and walks away into the snowy streets of New York.

Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets opens many doors for the future of the wizarding world past. Danger and dark times loom on the horizon, but the current mood of romance and happiness is a beautiful thing to hold on to. If the latest installment in JK Rowling’s cinematic universe works out well enough, we might see how it all goes yet.

If you’ve read this whole summary and haven’t seen Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets, the film is currently showing in theaters.
