The matrix: resurrections was a movie that had been in the works for over a decade. In 2019, after years of speculation, the film is finally announced. But the coronavirus (COVID-19) derailed production for months. In the summer of 2020, the showrunners were able to resume filming, but it wouldn’t be until nearly a year later that fans would learn anything substantial about the sci-fi epic.

What is certain is that Keanu Reeves will reprise his classic role as Neo / Thomas Anderson. Reeves, who became a major star after the 1999 release The matrix, will be joined by other franchise favorites like Carrie-Ann Moss and Jada Pinkett Smith. New cast members will also be featured in the film, including Neil Patrick Harris and Christina Ricci, as Collider reported. With a release date set for December 22 on HBO Max, fans will soon be able to enjoy a film shrouded in mystery.

What did the exclusive “The Matrix: Resurrections” trailer reveal?

Den of Geek offered a breakdown of the trailer for The matrix: resurrections, delving deep into the plot details. In the trailer, fans get the idea that Thomas Anderson forgot everything about the Matrix and was offered mysterious blue pills during his therapy, which seem to work to erase his memories of the Matrix. However, the trailer features a moment when Thomas meets the character of Abdul-Mateen, an apparent carbon copy of Morpheus, and he offers Thomas a red pill. At this point, the door opens for Thomas to become Neo.

New fan theories have emerged

In light of the new footage, fans have started to develop theories about what’s really going on in The matrix: resurrections. Den of Geek pointed out that it’s very possible that the film will serve as a “passing the torch” story, with Thomas Anderson / Neo helping forge a new generation of heroes, along with Trinity.

Another fan theory is that the Thomas Anderson in the trailer isn’t human at all, but maybe a code snippet that’s slowly coming to its own and needs to be fixed. With some featured cast members missing from the published footage, much remains to be speculation.

Early fan reactions have all been overwhelmingly positive, with CinemaBlend sharing some of the best fan reactions: “I just saw the trailer for The Matrix: Resurrections at CinemaCon and it looks so badass. I was so scared it wouldn’t surprise me, but I was totally wrong, ”one fan shared on Twitter. For many, the film’s debut cannot come soon enough, as it seems unlikely that more footage from the top-secret film project will be released before the release date.
