Manistee County teenager breaks national gambling record 40 years ago


Manistee dancers Paul Craig and Dan Johnson recently returned from an unforgettable trip when they toured Europe as part of an international tour of Blue Lake Fine Arts. The two dancers from the Conservatory of Dance followed in the footsteps of Katie Winicki, who toured Europe in the past with the Blue Lake Fine Arts Tour. Craig and Johnson both undergo intensive dance training at the Conservatory of Dance and Performing Arts under Deb Knight.


Teen breaks national record

Troy Popielarz, 13, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Popielarz, says he broke the national record for highest score on the Battle Zone video game, according to news anchor Paul Harvey. Troy said his score of 5,312,000 apparently surpassed the national record of three million. Troy noted surprise at this feat and received no official word but explained his video prowess to much practice on his Atari. The video assistant also recently won a video game contest sponsored by the Birdfeeder Restaurant at the Manistee National Forest Festival. This time, Troy got the highest score on Space Invaders to crown the top prize of $25.

Memorial Hospital

Memorial Hospital’s acceptance as a contract hospital by the Michigan Hospital Service – Blue Cross – was announced today. This approval will allow Memorial Hospital to better serve the Manistee County public who are covered by Blue Cross insurance through the Farm Bureau and other groups.


Respect for heroes

The celebration of American Hero Days to be held here July 17-18 will open with a program of Appropriate Music to be played by the Iron Works Band on the courthouse lawn beginning at 7:45 p.m. local will also tell the importance and purpose of celebrating Heroes Day. The purpose of the special observance is to familiarize as many people as possible with the regular weekly purchase of bonds and stamps.
