Relive The Black Metal Family Christmas Photo In July

Since Christmas in July is a thing, let’s all remember the black metal Christmas picture that warmed the shells of our coal-laden hearts last year. In December 2021, a photo of a 30-year-old woman and her small family, dressed in Norwegian Death Metal gear and corpse paint next to a mall Santa, went viral. Her 4-year-old daughter Charlie is in Ol’ Saint Nick’s smiling lap.

Newsweek (of all publications) picked up the photo, seen on Instagram below. Lexis Baker said the photo was her boyfriend Rhett’s idea.

“He said the only thing he wanted for Christmas was for us to take pictures with Santa the way he wanted. Santa treated us like any other family, he was super nice. The cameraman was about 17 years old and before taking the picture he said ‘everyone is smiling… or not.'”

Boyfriend Rhett imagined the juxtaposition of traditional Christmas and Black Metal. “There’s nothing better than high contrast,” Rhett said. “Take the concept of a good ol’ family Christmas and mix it with good ol’ church burning Norwegian death metal and I had a feeling you could get a fun image. Corpse Paint has been part of the metal scene since Alice Cooper and so many other old metal bands, but it was definitely the band Mayhem that inspired me the most.”

The accompanying video on TikTok has over 4 million views. He follows the gang on their post-photo trip to Chuck E. Cheese. Impressive.

The photo has also been repositioned as an Insane Clown Posse Christmas meme, with someone on Reddit writing, “My own juggalette! Whoop Whoop!” You can see the potential ICP connection.

Only 5 months before Christmas. Be good boys and girls and remember Black Metal Saint Nick is watching. Don’t fuck it. 🖤🎅
