Matt Clarke will take over as managing director of Wellington Airport in May.

Wellington Airport’s general manager of 10 years, Steve Sanderson, is stepping down.

The airport’s experienced boss, Matt Clarke, is due to take up his post from the beginning of May.

Wellington Airport chairman Peter Coman said with international borders reopening and stability returning to the aviation industry, now was a good time for a smooth succession .

Wellington Airport is about to have a new chief executive.

“Steve signaled his interest in this transition to the board a few months ago, after 10 years as CEO. The board believes this is the right time for a well-managed transition from a leader very successful to another,” Coman said.

He praised Sanderson’s leadership and vision during this period.

Sanderson led many significant investments in the airport, bringing growth to private and community shareholders, Coman said.

“Especially the management of the airport during the difficult time of Covid.”

Clarke has spent the past 16 years as a senior executive of the Infratil Group. He has over 20 years of experience in the airport industry, having first joined Infratil’s airport team in Europe after serving as General Manager of Rotorua Airport.
