It’s May and we can already almost smell the pancakes!

In no time, the annual Rotary Club of Conroe pancake dinner will be back. This year, the popular event will take place on Tuesday, May 17 at the Honor Cafe in downtown Conroe, which hosts the club’s weekly meetings and other special events. The price remains at the very reasonable $25 per person for a big delicious spread from Chef Oscar including pancakes and all the trimmings, bacon and the restaurant’s famous blueberry sausage. The bar will be open for all the great libations to go along with the breakfast for the dinner everyone loves. There will be more famous waiters this year – they were the hit of the party last year, that’s for sure.

Tickets are available from any Conroe Rotarian or by contacting President-Elect Derrick McCarley at [email protected]

The Rotary District 5910 conference was held at our very own Lake Conroe Margaritaville Resort April 22-24 and it was a “RotaryVille” success. Rotarians certainly enjoyed the Jimmy Buffet/Island vibe of the facility and the opportunity to see Rotary friends they missed during the pandemic virtual conference years. Three of our local heroes received special honors at the conference. Wally Lockey of the Rotary Club of Lake Conroe and Sondra Hernandez of the Rotary Club of Conroe both received the district’s Roll of Fame award, which is the district’s highest honor. Both seemed genuinely surprised, but we all know the honor was well deserved. Their service to Rotary has been beyond expectation for many years. Wally worked tirelessly to help build Memory Park even before he was a Rotarian! And Sondra, in addition to being club secretary for many years, has helped us promote Rotary and our events in many ways through her work at the Courier. Congratulations to you two !

The third prize was awarded to former District Governor Chuck Mason. Chuck received Rotary International’s Service Above Self award. It is one of the highest honors awarded by Rotary and is only awarded to an average of 150 Rotarians per year, out of the 1.2 million Rotarians worldwide. PDG Chuck, a member of the Rotary Club of Beaumont, is a part-time resident of our lake community with his lovely wife Becky, also a former District Governor. We don’t often see Rotary couples where both have served as governors, but the Masons are a special couple who have served our district and their club for decades. PDG Chuck has served in the district leadership almost continuously since becoming a Rotarian, in addition to serving both at the zone and international levels. We are so honored to have Chuck in our district and in our lives. We end Chuck with a round of applause for this well-deserved honor.
