Flash kicked off Season 8 with a five-part event titled “Armageddon,” which features many stars from across the Arrowverse. The end of Episode 3 heralded the return of some of these characters, but Episode 4 will star Batwoman, Alex Danvers, and Ryan Choi. Numerous Flash Fans may remember Ryan Choi from “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” but he also has a lot of history in the comics.
Osric Chau first appeared in ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’ as comic book character Ryan Choi
The Arrowverse first featured Ryan Choi, played by Osric Chau, in the comic book-inspired event, “Crisis on Infinite Earths”. Ryan was a scientist living in Ivy Town who was married and had a child. The End of Days, or “Crisis,” was sweeping away several universes, thanks to a wave of antimatter created by the Anti-Monitor, and the heroes of the Arrowverse needed Ryan’s help.
The superhero team recruited Ryan as the Paragon of Humanity to help them save the world from the Anti-Monitor. However, it took a bit of conviction for him to agree.
Ultimately, Ryan helped the other Paragons ensure the survival of the world. He now lives on Earth-Prime among the rest of the heroes of the Arrowverse. But, Ryan Choi’s run in the comics would suggest his time in the Arrowverse isn’t over yet. Fortunately, fans will be able to see him again in Flash.
Ryan Choi is an iteration of the atom in the comics
In the comics, Ryan Choi is the third character to take on the role of the atom. Ryan idolized Ray Palmer, the second iteration of the Atom. And after being born and raised in Hong Kong, he immigrated to the United States to take over Ray’s job at Ivy University. Later, Ryan also took over the superhero duties from Ray. “Crisis on Infinite Earths” gave its comic book history a nod when Ryan messed up Ray Palmer when they first met.
After “Crisis,” Osric Chau discussed his future as Ryan Choi with ComicBook.com and whether or not fans would see him following his story in the comics.
“I want Ryan to wear the Atom suit at some point. I would like him to fully assume the role of the Atom. We want the Heroes’ Journey. I want him to win it,” said Chau. So that’s what I’m hoping for, if it makes sense for the story. If it makes sense for him to jump into any of these shows. Does he have his own show? I don’t know But I hope the powers that be at least think about it.
Fans will just have to wait and see if they can ever witness Chau in Ryan Choi’s comic book costume in the Arrowverse. And maybe they will be in Flash Season 8, Episode 4.
Ryan Choi returns in episode 4 of season 8 of “The Flash”
Osric Chau reprise his role as Ryan Choi in Flash Season 8, Episode 4, “Armageddon, Part 4”. But this time, he’s playing Ryan in 2031, and the future looks a lot different, thanks to Eobard Thawne.
The synopsis for “Armageddon, Part 4” reads: “Barry is shocked when Eobard Thawne returns in the most unexpected way and with a connection to a loved one. Damien Darhk gives Barry some advice, but there is a Snag An epic battle begins with Reverse Flash pitted against The Flash, Team Flash, Batwoman, Sentinel and Ryan Choi.
Flash Season 8 Episode 4, starring Osric Chau as comic book character Ryan Choi, premieres December 7 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
