Why Scream 2022 should kill the gales

All of the legacy characters are unlikely to survive Scream 2022, and Gale Weathers’ death would both benefit the plot and make Courtney Cox’s wish come true.

The plot for the next one Scream 2022 remains shrouded in secrecy, but there’s a compelling reason the sequel should kill Gale Weathers. Following the tragic death of director Wes Craven in 2015, the meta slasher series is now relaunched by directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. Franchise regulars Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), Dewey Riley (David Arquette) and Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox) join a new roster of young characters.

the original from 1996 Scream followed Sidney and his friends as they were hunted down by Ghostface, a masked serial killer obsessed with horror films. Gale has featured prominently throughout the franchise, with Cox’s performance a constant highlight as Gale has gone from a selfish reporter to a more compassionate person. Scream 2022 is reportedly back in Sidney’s hometown of Woodsboro, but several scripts exist and alternate scenes have been filmed to prevent plot details from leaking.

The prospect of seeing Sidney, Dewey, and Gale reunite in Scream 2022 is undeniably exciting, but it’s highly likely that at least one member of the trio will finally perish. In a 2011 interview with Dread Central, Craven revealed that Cox originally wanted Gale to die in Scream 4, making her the biggest pretender to be killed. While Craven was reluctant to kill his beloved protagonists, losing a memorable face would help usher the series into a new era, and Gale’s death could bring strong emotional payoff.

During the interview, Freddy Director Wes Craven was asked about his thoughts on the trio’s murder. He said his refusal to do so was because “they are the heart of the franchise”. However, he then admitted: “Courtney was begging me to kill Gale in Scream 4, but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. “It seems clear how much this would have happened in the fourth entry, as Gale is attacked and injured while investigating the annual Woodsboro Stabathon event. Gale’s survival has allowed him to return for Scream 2022, but his death would certainly have had an impact. She would have gone out like Gale – ignoring the police and trying to solve the murders on her own. Craven doubted he would ever kill his heroes, but he later accepted the idea. Unfairly criticized Scream 4 was planning to open a new trilogy, and he said IGN this “next time, one or more of these characters will have to to die”.

Yes Scream 2022 plans to revive the horror series for a new generation, Sidney, Dewey, and Gale are unlikely to all survive once again, and Cox’s return could have been prompted by the prospect of a memorable death. As likeable as Gale is, she is arguably the easiest legacy character to lose, and her demise would raise the stakes considerably. Sidney has endured so much torture that killing her can seem cruel, while Dewey’s ability to avoid death is a common gag. Finally killing him might not have the desired effect, especially if viewers expect him to come out of it all over again. On the other hand, Gale Weathers’ bossy and intrusive nature could put her in danger, and her disappearance would provide her husband Dewey with an emotional arc in which he seeks revenge.

Gale’s murder might even be what prompts Sidney to return to Woodsboro and face the new Ghostface. Scream 2022 may still honor Craven by keeping his iconic trio alive, but killing a legacy character would decisively show that the original protagonists are no longer safe and that the rules of the horror film have changed.
